Compostela Valley has long been regarded as Mindanao’s “golden province” because of its vibrant mining industry and the rich gold mineral deposits that can be found at the bosom of its mountains.
Consequently, Pantukan is known to be a highly mineralized area and the home of gold-rich areas in Region XI.
In the past decade, its remote barangay, Barangay Araibo, was considered a gold rush area. In fact, remnants of small-scale mining activities are evident in the locally declared People’s Small-Scale Mining Area or Minahang Bayan, located just meters away from our tenement.

For context, every 10 sacks of ore yield 1kg of gold when refined. Currently, there are 207 tunnels in operation, although only 185 are officially registered. Each tunnel employs at least 25 workers per shift, with two shifts per day. This means there are a total of 9,250 workers at the mine every day.
Given that each worker extracts around two sacks of minerals daily using manual methods, that means we have a production of 18,000 to 20,000 sacks per day. These sacks sell at Php 2,500 each and no longer require further processing, making it practically hassle-free.
So assuming that an average of 19,000 sacks are extracted daily, the gross revenue from mining operations in the area is at approximately Php 47.5 million per day, making the area very profitable.
